Effective Scholarship Strategies

Before starting a campaign to win college merit scholarship money, a person should have several scholarship strategies in mind.  What is discussed below has been successful in helping other people win scholarship money.

The first thing to do is get organized.  Ideally the applicant has been preparing for this

adventure since early in high school and already has done a lot of preparation.  You should have

done a significant amount of searching to identify the scholarships you want to apply for, and you should have looked over  the application materials and be aware of what will be required for the entry submission.  It is a good idea to make notes about the requirements of the particular applications.  This is useful so that if some of the applications look similar and ask for similar types of essays, for example, you can easily modify your material and use your research and study to cover multiple applications.  In general you will want to recycle your essays and other materials as much as possible.  It has been said that once you have done the work to fill out two scholarship applications, you are already 60% of the way to completing 10.  So just learning how to go through the scholarship application process and reusing your materials, including work from previous class assignments, are good and effective scholarship strategies to employ.

Next, plan on applying for a lot of scholarships.  Two or three dozen applications is a lot of work, but this is the best assurance that you will win scholarship money from multiple places.  To repeat, the process gets easier and faster once you have a couple of submissions under your belt.

Probably the best way to begin the application process is with smaller scholarships that are local or statewide in nature.  Even if the award is only for a few hundred dollars, it is worth a shot.  Every little bit helps, and if you win some small scholarships you can use that fact to help you win larger ones.  You can list this accomplishment on your larger scholarship applications, and that can give you another little boost. As for the larger scholarships, don’t sell yourself short, you might surprise yourself and be one of the winners, so don’t hesitate to apply for those as well.  Just remember to tell personal stories as much as possible to make your application unique.  You want to make the judges feel like they already know you well.  Don’t just make a laundry list of accomplishments.

It is a good idea to keep a running list of all the activities you have participated in and all the organizations you have joined or been a part of.  Keep a list of the number of hours you put into each activity, especially things related to community service.  Community service is often a big part of the scholarship judging process, so being able to relate specifics can give you an edge.

Lastly, don’t get discouraged if you don’t win anything right away, and certainly don’t take these kinds of disappointments personally.  There is a lot of subjectivity in the scholarship judging process, and you cannot control that.  The best scholarship strategy in this case is to simply turn the page and go after the next one.

Keeping all these scholarship strategies in mind will help keep your efforts organized.  Good preparation and good organization will make the whole effort easier and help you attain better results.
